Interview with Alexander Uspenskiy during Cup of Russia 2007

V: First question is always traditional. How did you start to skate?

Alexander Uspensky

A: When I was 4,5 years old I just was walking with my mum and we saw the skaters, who were practicing  in the park. Mum just wondered if I wanted to be a sportsman too. I answered yes, I really don’t know why, because at that time I had no idea what the figure skating was. From that time I skate. First coach was from skating school “Lokomotiv” in Moscow. Then I gave up skating for short period of time, and just began to study at school. After few months my coach suggested me to skate in ballet on ice. I accepted this invitation, but I did not really want to skate in ballet on ice, so soon I changed the coach, but I decided to continue skating. During 10 years I worked with the same coach, but since January 2007 I train with Marina Kudriavceva.( the wife of Victor Kudriavcev). Right now except skating I study in University to become a coach.
But figure skating is not everything in my life. I’m very interested in music and theatre.

V: Most of your friends are from figure skating or not?
A: Unfortunately, as known, people can’t have many friends. But sometimes it can happen, that person finds really good friend among his rivals, and this rival on ice can be very good and close friend in life.

V: What do you remember from your first competitions?

A: I remember my first competitions very good. When I was on the ice and was supposed to start to skate I forgot everything, I forgot what I should do. I was crying because of that, came to coach and said: “I don’t remember anything”. There were many girls at that competition, and only one guy (me).  So I had to skate anyway. While I was skating, I was thinking which element I would do in 2 seconds and did it.  I’m really nervous before competitions even nowadays. I feel a lot of responsibility, when I skate. I always want to do maximum.

V: As I’m from Scandinavian skating, could you mention some skaters from Sweden and Finland, whom you like?
A: From Swedish skating I know only Adrian and Kristoffer. Concerning Kris, he has his own style, it’s always interesting to watch his programs, people like them. Sometimes he skates well and can take good places, sometimes he is not very successful. But I think if he put good jumps and other elements of figure skating together with his original style of skating it will be very great. Concerning Adrian, I saw him 2 years ago last time. As far as I know, he can do quad, he can do triple axel and that means that he has good technical level. I know Mikael Chrolenko from Norway, I like to talk with him, think he is nice guy.

V: Do you choose music for your programs or coach does that?

A: Usually I choose, but I always advice with the coach. If to talk about my taste in music, I would say that I like Japanese musician Kitaro and I also like classical music very much, for example Tchaykovskiy.

V: How do you like to entertain?
A: For sure, night clubs are not my thing. I like to spend time with friends, I enjoy walking alone in the city. I like to be alone in calm atmosphere.

Favorite color: yellow

Favorite book: I read many books and every new book becomes my favorite. I like philosophic books.
