New interview with Kristoffer Berntsson and his thoughts about WCH2008 in Gothenburg

V: Tell me about your exhibition performance on Justin Timberlake’s music. How the idea was created?

K: My choreographer Zerjon Abebe did this performance. We just listened to different love music, and these songs are popular and the style suits me, so we decided to choose “My love” and “Lovestoned”. It was fun to try. And you know, during this performance I’m killing mosquito, this thing was also idea of my choreographer, we thought that it would be more fun, if we do it with mosquito. I will skate it in WCH exhibition gala.

V: Is it true that you make music for your programs on the computer?

K: Yes, I’ve mixed my free program,  and I worked with music to my short program as well.

V: How does it feel to have WCH home?

K: It’s exciting. It’s great to see all skaters coming to Gothenburg. We had World Championships in 1976, so that was so long time ago. After it we had World Championships in Synchronized Skating, but it’s another thing. It’s good for sport, it’s good for Sweden. My family will come to competition and support me.

V: Do you feel much attention on you now?

K: Yes, I do. There are many posters with me all over the city, in airport , in ice-rink. Many journalists want to make interview with me, to talk to me, make video for TV.

V: Have you changed in character, in behavior since you were like 17-20 years old?

K: I don’t think I’ve changed much. Of course, you get more experience. I think I became more experienced now. I know how to deal with many situations, you always learn to deal with for example media, with friends and so on. I can express myself better both in skating in usual life. I can use the body in my programs much better, than I used to, I feel more comfortable. But  my points of view did not change so much.

V: Many skaters were asked, if you were not skater, who would you be? Now it’s your turn to answer :)

K: After finishing my studies, I would work with electro engineering. I don’t think I would do some other kind of sport professionally. It feels like figure skating or nothing. I used to do some other sports, but it was mostly for fun, like football, badminton, table tennis, but never professionally.

V: Last months before the Worlds did you and your coach change politics in training?

K: I train according my plan, which works already during many years. I think it’s good plan. First, it’s a little bit more training, but then closer to competitions it becomes easier. After ECH I was a bit sick, that’s why I could not go to Nordics and after it when I was well I started practicing very hard. Last week before WCH I had only one practice per day.

V: What are your plans after WCH? You skate for sure one more season, does not matter what result will be now?

K: I will skate 2 more seasons for sure, until next Olympics at least. Then we will see. Now it’s fun for me to skate and it goes well. I know that many skaters think about finishing skating, when they are 25 and more. But for me if my skating is satisfying and I still have motivation to skate, then I will continue skating. If I does not feel it, then I will stop.

V: How do you relax after practices, what helps you to relax?

K: I just listen to the music or I’m with my friends and family. Usually I don’t talk about figure skating at home.

V: Is it any place in the world, where you would like to go in the future? ( Some country, where you have not been yet.)

K: I would like to go to some nice resort like Caribbean. It should be nice place with warm weather and sun all the time. You know, in Sweden there is no such weather.

V: If you could choose country for living except Sweden, what country you would choose and why?

K: That’s difficult. I like Sweden, so I would not change the country. But if we imagine that Sweden does not exist, then maybe I would say Denmark. If to choose country outside Scandinavia I would probably choose Netherlands. You know, I’ve been in many countries. In some countries it’s just good to visit and spend your vacations, but I never want to live there. If to answer about country, where I could live, I would say Netherlands. It’s similar to Sweden in saome way.

V: Have you ever read in press, magazines or newspapers some things about you, which actually had never happened?

K: Sometimes they get something wrong. But I don’t remember any big things, which were untrue, it’s not like fiction.

V: Can you name 3 features of character, which you like in your self and 2 features which you don’t like?

K: I’m kind and modest, I’m fast learner, I learn everything pretty quick. Sometimes I’m not so social, a bit shy.

V: Which nicest present have you ever received?

K: When I turned 25 years old last summer I received very nice watch. When I was child, I was really happy to receive very nice car toy, and I also remember my first bicycle.

V: What moments in your life do you think were the happiest?
K: It was many pleasant moments, like when I skated just great at Words 2007 in Japan. If we don’t talk about figure skating, then I would mention my trip to USA with Filip Stiller, we had much fun there. I hope during the life time it will be more and more great moments to remember.

Read now Kristoffer’s thoughts about WCH 2008 in his home town Gothenburg:
“Worlds was an amazing experience for me. I think the hole event was great, I hope everybody will agree. The audience and organization were better than I could imagine. Especially when the Swedes skated! It was incredible to go out there on the ice in front of a full Scandinavium! The short went great, did all the jumps and the steps and spins were good too. The free wasn't quite as good, with a bad fall on the Salchow in the end. That hurt and I lost a lot of point. I also missed one tripple-tripple combination, doing a double. But overall it was an ok competition, eventhough it wasn't the dream skate I wanted. If to talk about other Swedish skaters, I would say that Viktoria did a super short program, really good. In the free she really went for it and tried all of the hardest element, she did a few mistakes,  but overall a very good competition. It was also her first Worlds.... I didn't see any of Adrian's programs, but I know he skated really good, making all of his elements.”
