Read here my interview with ISU Grand-Prix COC2008 winner amazing skater Jeremy Abbott.
V: Tell me please how you started to skate and at what age? J: I started skating when I was 2, my mum took me to local ice-rink for public sessions. But I understood that figure skating is my thing and that I really want to do it when I was about 4 years old. I saw Robin Cousins skate and that impressed me much. My mum was skating as well, when she was very little. So she never participated in skating competitions, but she always loved skating. Talking about coaches, I had the coach in Aspen, I enjoyed working with her, but when I turned 14 she said that she could not train me anymore, so I moved to Colorado Springs for further trainings with my new coach. But I want to say that I still feel great support from my first coach in Aspen, I see her often and I’m very thankful to her for all jobs she did with me. So as I said when I moved to Colorado Spring my new coach was Tom Zakrajsek, and I’m still coached by Zakrajsek today. He is great trainer and great coach, I’m very pleased. I’m very satisfied with our work together. V: Do you study somewhere or figure skating takes all your time? J: I’m not at college at the moment, I graduated from the high school in 2004, I want to focus on my skating as much as possible now, so I don’t study. But I plan to attend college in the future. At the moment I’m not sure what exactly I would like to study. I guess I will try to take different classes and then will see what I’m interested in. I would not mind studying physiology to know how body works and so on, kind of sport training. V: How much do you train during the week? J: I train about 2,5 hours per day, 6 days a week. But as you understand I train not only on ice, I have some off ice trainings and choreography. V: Was Cup of China 2008 your best competition? J: Yes, it was. It felt great, I won gold medal. I guess it was the first time, when I skated well both programs short and free. Usually I skate successfully in the short program but then do some mistakes in free program and the opposite. But Cup of China was successful competition, where everything went good. V: How does your usual day look like? J: I actually wake up pretty late comparing with other skaters. I probably wake up around 8.45 or 9 am. Then I go to practice to the ice-rink around 10-10.30 am, and then I have lunch and after that again practice. 2 times per week I go to Olympic Training Centre, where I do off ice practices. It can be fitness and weight-trainings or maybe something else. And then I just go home and relax. In my free time I like to be with my friends. I enjoy very much time spending with them. I don’t have any interest in particular, so we do a little bit of everything and we have fun. V: Can you name your favorite skaters? J: I don’t have one favorite skater in particular, so I will name several, who are great in my opinion: Brian Joubert is technically incredible, Tomas Verner is very creative person, I like his programs, they are different all the time. Actually I like some ice dancing pairs. Well, I think I should say some words about Scandinavian skaters as well. Kristoffer Berntsson has his short program from last year, I like the concept of this program, of course disco program is amazing, you can get so much fun by watching it. I knew Niklas Hogner and Angelika Pylkina, but unfortunately they stopped skating together. V: What features do you like in your character and is it any feature, which you don’t like in yourself? J: I’m happy and positive person and I like it. Concerning bad features it’s pretty hard to judge about yourself, but I guess I’m selfish sometimes and can be critical, and it can happen that from time to time I get a bit low level of self-confidence. I wish I could be more outgoing. V: What are your plans for nearest future? J: I’ve been told that I would take part in Grand-prix Final, that’s great, then we have Nationals. I expect to improve my skating from what I’ve done in China. Jeremy’s favorite things: Color: Blue and black Drink: Orange vitamin water ( It’s very popular drink in USA, it’s like Fanta, but without gas). Book: I actually like Harry Porter books :) Movie: I have a lot of favorite movies. I guess it’s easier to mention styles of films, which I prefer. So I like comedies, some mystery movies, but not crime. Best place in the world: My bed :) I mean I like to travel, I liked Moscow, Beijing, Gothenburg, but you asked about best place, so my answer is bed! Dream: To be happy, figure skating makes me happy, so I want to do it as much as I can. I want to be World and Olympic Champion. But my biggest dream is to be happy in whatever I do. It’s very important for me to have goals in life. Music: Oh, I listen to so many different styles: Jazz, pop, R’n’b. Food: Sushi. I went to Japan twice last year, so I tried much Sushi, I like this kind of food. Language: Unfortunately, at the moment I speak only English. I wish I could say that I speak Russian, Japanese and French as well. I studied French at school, but the level was not very high, so I can’t speak French fluently. I really would like to learn some languages in the future, maybe I will start with Japanese |
